Avoiding indo crowds for a portugese summer? You Bet.
Portugal surfing in summer, you might ask? Seriously, yeah, we thought the same. But after a few weeks in Ericeira, it has been epic.
Ericeira is known for long rights and point breaks with way fewer crowds than Indo. So we decided to skip the usual busy spots this year and explore somewhere different with fresh culture and great waves.
The water was a shock at first because it is pretty cold. But with sunny 30-degree days and fresh coastal winds, it is perfect for morning and evening walks. The food is amazing and the people are super friendly.
Our favourite part is the epic vibes in the water. Surfers cheer you on and beginners get plenty of space. No one pushes onto your waves so everyone has fun. Our top break so far has been The Reef which is just a quick walk or drive from town.
Top Surf Spots:
Ribeira D’Ilhas: Consistent waves great for cruisers and intermediate surfers! These waves are super consistent and very long! If you’re a kiwi, think Raglan but a right! Yeww!
Coxos: Fast barreling right perfect for barrel hunters!
The Reef: Powerful reef break for advanced to intermediate surfers. Super fun for a good long wave of turns or a quick tube!
Matadouro and Foz de Lizandro: Chill beach breaks for beginners and cruisers!
Tips:
Staying two or more weeks? Buy your own board and wetsuit as it is cheaper than renting
Check out Surf Point in town for second-hand gear. They helped us with great deals
Hire a car. Centauro is the best option! Good price and reliable. (NO RIP OFF!)
Stay near Ribeira D’Ilhas or town for easy surf and good vibes! You wanna be close to it all…
PS. Do not miss the Friday sunset party at Ericeira Boardriders. Its a bunch of surfers coming together post surfing all week to dance and watch the sun go down + $5 beers!!!!
Ericeira is an amazing European surf town with sun waves food and community. Loving it so far and excited for the next few weeks!
